Plastic and reconstructive eye surgery, or oculoplastics, can enhance vision, appearance, and overall self-esteem. The Eye Institute's oculoplastic surgeons performs surgery for those with medical problems, cosmetic needs, or vision disorders caused by trauma.

Treatment For Eyelid Conditions

Evaluation of tearing is frequently performed and procedures are available to reduce or increase the amount of tears in the eye as needed for appropriate lubrication.

Drooping eyelids can occur in both the upper or lower lids and can result in decreased vision.  These problems can be from birth (congenital) or can be acquired in adult life.  Both types can normally be treated on an outpatient basis.

Eyelid Spasms: There are 3 types of eyelid spasms that are treated by The Eye Institute’s oculoplastic surgeons. Those 3 are:

  1. Minor eyelid spasms which involves a slight twitch and is of no concern
  2. Essential Blepharo Spasm: these types of spasms are involuntary and usually involve both eyes and can cause the eyelids to close . These spasms are caused by abnormal nerve impulses and can be treated with medications, biofeedback, injections of botulinum or surgery.
  3. Hemifacial spasm: These spasms usually involve the eyelid muscle and the muscles around the mouth on only one side of the face. Hemifacial spasms are usually caused by an artery pressing on the nerve to the facial muscles. These spasms can be treated by either botulinum injections or surgery.

Oculoplastic surgery is also frequently required in the treatment of facial fractures and trauma.  Correct alignment of the orbital bones is necessary for the restoration of vision and ocular alignment.

Drs. Hunter and Roberts are the Eye Institute's specialists in matters of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery.
